Joseph W. Evans
Joe Evans is currently managing principal of Bankers’ Capital Group, LLC, an Atlanta-based private equity investment firm.
After beginning his banking career with Trust Company Bank (now SunTrust) in 1971, Joe worked for Monroe County Bank in Forsyth, Ga., from 1974 to 1980, serving as vice president, secretary and a member of the board. He joined Bank Corporation of Georgia as executive vice president shortly after its inception in 1980 and was named president and CEO four years later.
With banks in seven Georgia cities, Bank Corporation of Georgia entered into a merger of equals with publicly-held Century South Banks Inc. in 1997. Joe initially became president and chief operating officer of the merged entity, which retained the Century South name. He served as CEO from January 2000 until June 2001, when Century South, with assets in excess of $1.6 billion, was acquired by BB&T.
In early 2002, Joe and several other former Century South executives acquired a significant ownership position in LaGrange, Georgia-based Flag Financial Corporation, at which time Joe became chairman and CEO of the $500 million asset company. During 2002, Joe moved the Flag headquarters from LaGrange to Atlanta, and by the end of 2005, Flag was Atlanta’s largest locally headquartered community bank, with total assets in excess of $1.8 billion. In August of 2006, Evans announced the sale of Flag Financial Corporation to RBC Centura.
Following the sale of Flag, Joe and two other former Flag executives formed Bankers Capital Group, LLC for the purpose of acquiring and servicing impaired real estate loans and acquiring controlling positions in underperforming banks.
Joe is a director of Southern Trust Insurance Company and a member of the boards of trustees of the Care and Counseling Center of Georgia, the Methodist Children’s Home Foundation, and St. Martin’s Episcopal School.
At his alma mater, the Georgia Institute of Technology, Joe serves on the Executive Committee of the Alumni Association, the Board of Trustees of the Alexander-Tharpe Fund, and the Advisory Board of the College of Management where he has been inducted into the Academy of Distinguished Alumni.
Joe earned a bachelor’s degree in industrial management from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1971, graduating first in his class. He and his wife, Raena, live in Atlanta and spend considerable time on their six-generation family farm in Smarr, Ga. They have two daughters and six grandchildren.
